In the upcoming 2025 elections, we have a chance to make a real difference. One candidate stands out among the rest: LaToya Rivers. With her vision for a better future, she embodies the change we need. This blog post will explore why supporting LaToya is essential for our community and how you can get involved.
LaToya Rivers is not just another politician. She is a dedicated community leader with a deep connection to Huntersville. Her background in social work and community organizing gives her a unique perspective on the issues that matter. LaToya has spent years advocating for the future of Huntersville and it's residents. She knows that real change starts at the grassroots level.
Why LaToya? Hear it in her own words
For those who don’t know me, I’m LaToya Rivers, currently wrapping up my first term as your Huntersville Commissioner. Most of the time, I don’t go into detail about my educational background. But, I want to share it with you here, because I’ve learned that people often don’t realize the foundation and qualifications I bring to this office.
I earned my undergraduate degree in Political Science and Government, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration. I made the Dean’s List for both. And today, I work for the county as a Program Integrity Investigator, where I serve as a Certified Welfare Fraud Investigator. In other words, I know government inside and out. I understand how systems work—and just as important, how to make them work better for people.
But that’s just part of who I am. The icing on the cake is that I was born and raised right here in Huntersville. I went to public schools here. I grew up in church here. I prepared for college here. And after school, I came back here to raise my family. That’s why running to be the voice for Pottstown, my current and childhood neighborhood that for too long didn’t have a seat at the table, was a natural first step for me. Because this isn’t just where I live. This is home. And in my heart, I want everyone in Huntersville to thrive and be proud to call this place home.
Over the past two years as your Commissioner, I’ve worked hard to deliver on that vision.
I’ve improved communication with developers, setting the expectation that they partner with us on smart growth, follow our 2040 plan, and prioritize workforce housing. Under my leadership, 10 workforce housing units have already been established.
I’ve stood up for fiscal responsibility by requiring that projects using remote land also carry the developer’s investment—not just the taxpayers’.
And I’ve made it a priority to listen to you. From seniors to small business owners to neighborhoods like Pottstown, I’ve worked to give historically underrepresented voices a stronger place in town government. Together, we’ve begun laying the groundwork for anti-displacement plans, safer streets, better sidewalks, and real tools for seniors to age in place with dignity.
Looking ahead, my priorities are clear.I will expand workforce housing so that teachers, first responders, and healthcare workers can live in the community they serve. I will strengthen support for small businesses by connecting them with the resources they need to succeed and grow. And I will continue building stronger connections between residents, town leadership, county agencies, and nonprofits, because when we work together, people get the support they need to thrive.
At the end of the day, I want Huntersville to be the kind of community where every family can plant roots, every senior can age with dignity, and every resident, no matter their neighborhood, can be proud to say, this is my home.

My Vision for the Future
I have a clear vision for our community that's driven by community, staff and management feedback and guidance. She wants to create a place where everyone can thrive. Here are some key points of her vision:
Strengthen support for small businesses by connecting them with resources for growth and success and revitalize our downtown to be small business, community and visitor friendly.
Keep Huntersville’s growth smart, sustainable, and respectful of our historic neighborhoods.
Expand workforce housing so teachers, first responders, and healthcare workers can live in the community they serve.
The Power of Community
My campaign is much bigger than me. It is about building a community that works together for a common goal. When we unite, we can create lasting change. I encourage everyone to get involved and share their ideas; not just during the election cycle but year round. My door is always open.
Building a Supportive Network
Creating a supportive network is crucial for any campaign. My team is dedicated to fostering connections among supporters. This network allows for the sharing of resources, ideas, and encouragement.
Volunteer and Community Workshops: I plan to host workshops to educate the community on important issues. These sessions cover topics like voter registration, civic engagement, and advocacy skills.
Collaborative Projects: LaToya encourages collaboration among local organizations. By working together, we can tackle complex issues more effectively. This includes the Chamber of Commerce, LinkLKN, Mecklenburg County, Surrounding Town management, developers, charitable organizations, and elected officials.
